1. David taught this song: Coming back to HaShem makes you happy because your mistakes are forgiven and your sins won’t be mentioned.

א.  לְדָוִד מַשְׂכִּיל, אַשְׁרֵי נְשׂוּי–פֶּשַׁע כְּסוּי חֲטָאָה

 

2. You feel relieved, because HaShem won’t count your sins if you sincerely regret them.

ב.  אַשְׁרֵי אָדָם לֹא יַחְשֹׁב יְהוָה לוֹ עָו‍ֹן, וְאֵין בְּרוּחוֹ רְמִיָּה

 

3. Personally, when I didn’t admit my sins, I felt my bones wearing out from my constant anxiety; I would groan all day worrying about being punished.

ג.  כִּי–הֶחֱרַשְׁתִּי בָּלוּ עֲצָמָי,––בְּשַׁאֲגָתִי כָּל–הַיּוֹם

4. Day and night I felt my sins weighing on me. My strength was drying up like in the hot summer.

ד.  כִּי יוֹמָם וָלַיְלָה תִּכְבַּד עָלַי יָדֶךָ, נֶהְפַּךְ לְשַׁדִּי בְּחַרְבֹנֵי קַיִץ סֶלָה

5. So I constantly confess my sins to HaShem and He always removes them.

ה.  חַטָּאתִי אוֹדִיעֲךָ וַעֲו‍ֹנִי לֹא–כִסִּיתִי, אָמַרְתִּי אוֹדֶה עֲלֵי פְשָׁעַי לַיהוָה, וְאַתָּה נָשָׂאתָ עֲו‍ֹן חַטָּאתִי סֶלָה

6. That’s why all His followers pray for forgiveness the moment they feel regret, before it’s too late and they’re flooded with suffering.

ו.  עַל–זֹאת יִתְפַּלֵּל כָּל–חָסִיד אֵלֶיךָ לְעֵת מְצֹא, רַק לְשֵׁטֶף מַיִם רַבִּים אֵלָיו לֹא יַגִּיעוּ

7. They sing to Him: “I feel surrounded by Your protection and You rescue me from pain.”

ז.  אַתָּה סֵתֶר לִי. מִצַּר תִּצְּרֵנִי, רָנֵּי פַלֵּט תְּסוֹבְבֵנִי סֶלָה

 

8. Let me teach you, from what I’ve seen, the way to come back to HaShem.

ח.  אַשְׂכִּילְךָ וְאוֹרְךָ בְּדֶרֶךְ–זוּ תֵלֵךְ, אִיעֲצָה עָלֶיךָ עֵינִי

​

9. Consider that when HaShem gives us suffering it’s for our own good, like the grooming of an animal, so that our sins can be removed. Don’t be foolish like that animal, needing to be restrained with its mouth shut so it doesn’t bite.

ט.  אַל–תִּהְיוּ כְּסוּס כְּפֶרֶד אֵין הָבִין, בְּמֶתֶג–וָרֶסֶן עֶדְיוֹ לִבְלוֹם בַּל קְרֹב אֵלֶיךָ

10. Sinners suffer greatly because they don’t learn the lesson that suffering is for their own good. But those who trust that HaShem brings suffering to remove sin are surrounded with kindness.

י.  רַבִּים מַכְאוֹבִים לָרָשָׁע, וְהַבּוֹטֵחַ בַּיהוָה–חֶסֶד יְסוֹבְבֶנּוּ

11. Those who were forgiven sing happily because they’re overjoyed in HaShem’s kindness.

יא.  שִׂמְחוּ בַיהוָה וְגִילוּ צַדִּיקִים, וְהַרְנִינוּ כָּל–יִשְׁרֵי–לֵב
